If you enjoy science, technology, engineering, art, and math, then you are a “Maker” and this is the right club for you! Students compete in STEAM challenges and engage in project-based learning.  Fifth grade students collaborate once a month on Tuesdays. Sixth, seventh and eighth grade students collaborate twice a month on Wednesdays.  Makerspace Club meets from 2:30pm – 3:15pm in room 804. The yearly meeting schedule is posted on Ms. DeFilippis’ school webpage at the beginning of each school year and reminder announcements about upcoming meetings are made on the morning news at least two days prior to the meeting.

Here are a few of the challenges that students have worked on:

Pipe cleaner challenge-   
* 12 minutes to build the tallest free-standing structure using only pipe cleaners

Strongest book stand-
•Build a free standing device to hold the most amount of books
•Books must be at least 3 inches from the surface

Trampoline challenge-
•Create a trampoline with the highest bounce
•Trampoline cannot exceed a height of 5 inches
•Materials: Paper bowls, string, paper clips, rubber bands, tape,
plastic wrap, cloth, rubber ball

Throwing arm challenge-
•Create a throwing arm that will launch a ball.  Your hands must
be at least 1 ft away from the ball when launching.
•Competition  #1: ball that travels the furthest in the air
•Competition #2: Ball that hits the most cups down

Straw rocket challenge- 
* Design and build a straw rocket using the following materials.
•Rubber band, toothpicks, index card, Popsicle stick, card stock,
scissors, tape, pencil eraser                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    •Winner: Straw rocket that travels the furthest distance.

Pasta tower challenge-
* Design and build the tallest free standing pasta tower
•Materials-  Pasta, tape
•Time – 30 minutes
