A conflict started between EA and FIFA in Qatar 2 weeks ago because FIFA was asking EA for $300 million for EA to continue using FIFA’s name for their games. EA was shocked and confused as to why they were asking for so much, but EA wasn’t going to have it. They shut down the proposition and broke the collaboration between them.
According to Protocol.com, “It’s a purely financial disagreement, with FIFA reportedly asking for close to double its current licensing fee and more stringent rules. EA is demanding more freedom to monetize its football games with new ventures like Esports and even NFTs.”
The New York Times reported, “But the writing had been on the wall for a split for months. While the dispute was undoubtedly rooted in part in differing financial expectations.”
EA and FIFA had been partners since 1993, and their partnership made good profit for both companies. By 2021, EA paid FIFA $150 million every year to use their name to sell their games.
EA and FIFA made a lot of games together that really were famous and fun to play. In all, they made 31 famous games throughout 1993 and 2023.
