Girls in Afghanistan

Afghanistan has a major issue currently. Girls in the area are no longer allowed to have an education. The people who created this law are the Taliban. In August of 2021, girls started to learn in secret schools called madrassas, or Islamic schools. On March 22, 2022, schools reopened, but girls were quickly sent home and the promise was broken.

This law prohibiting girls from going to school was created due to the lack of a “safe environment” and Afghanistan”s leadership issues. Community based literacy skills classes are how girls still have an education at all.

Girls in Afghanistan who wish to remain anonymous have said, “Education is our right. We cannot go to school, we cannot go to work to earn money and live our life as women can in other countries.”

Afghanistan is the only country where girls are not allowed to go to school. In the secret schools there are over 400 students.  Malala is a spokesperson and in 2012 she was shot in the left side of her head because she was protesting for girls to go to school, and to this day she is still a spokesperson. Girls in Afghanistan don’t want to protest because they don’t want to get killed.
