In January, students in theater arts with Mrs. Welch put on a play for the school called Mac Burger. Only 8th Grade students could perform in this play. The class read numerous scripts (around 10) and picked this one for the play. There are many jobs behind the scenes, but for this production it was only stage crew, stage managers, set-design, and sound. We kept the set very very simple due to time constraints and limited resources, but the students in the class did the set for this production. Other productions in the past included 6th and 8th graders, but it seemed a right of passage for 8th graders to get this privilege..
Memorizing lines and learning their cues was the task that needed the most work, but this is typical of all productions. One student, Pedro, designed the t-shirts, and luckily there was a generous, anonymous donor to supply them for the cast. We worked on the play for a good part of the semester. All the students worked extremely hard to make their characters come alive.
Mrs. Welch tries to put on a show twice a year (one every semester). The next production will be at the end of this year. There is a cast of 35 plus students that will be acting and directing in the next show for the spring. Watching students’ grow in confidence and their dedication to their parts as both a director and as an actor is what Mrs. Welch loves the most about her job. They really did a wonderful job of being a part of an ensemble.
We thank Mrs. Welch for answering these questions. This play was amazing.
